Familiar to some, this is Susan, or Tube Girl as she was originally known. A big part of my final piece for my FMP based on London, I originally intended to give Susan a full graphic novel, but after loads of bad stuff happened in my family life the past few weeks I only had time to do a short series of illustrations based around her. I think I'll try to finish her book over the summer though.
Susan is taken from a candid photo I got of a woman on the Piccadilly Line, incase anyone recognises her
The idea behind the final half of the project was to communicate the concept of people not appreciating the beauty in everyday things enough. So Susan is an example of someone who is depressed & lifeless because she ignores the vibrancy of her surroundings. Since London is by far the most dynamic city I've ever been to, & there are a lot of city slickers who don't stop long enough to look at how extraordinary the things around them are, this seemed like a fitting concept to me. So that's why she's grey, & everything else is not, but in some of the illios this doesn't show up so well
The illustrations also sort of follow her journey through London, but with a lot of bits missing as I couldn't get all the drawings done that I'd wanted
